Vardenafil: ingredient and products
Why vardenafil formulation matters: orodispersible exposure research, food, QT precautions and practical product comparisons.
Vardenafil is an oral PDE5 inhibitor for erectile dysfunction. Its most useful distinguishing lesson is that the formulation can matter as much as the milligram number: an orodispersible tablet and a film-coated tablet can deliver different exposure even when both say 10 mg.
Key points
- Sexual stimulation is still required; vardenafil does not create desire.
- The reference orodispersible and film-coated tablets are not automatically interchangeable.
- Dissolving in the mouth does not, by itself, prove a faster clinical response.
- A QT precaution makes heart-rhythm history and interacting medicines part of the review.
- “Professional” and jelly variants need evidence for the exact product, not borrowed original-brand trial results.
Why the same amount can behave differently
The Levitra EU information distinguishes film-coated tablets from a 10 mg orodispersible tablet. The latter is taken without water and is not bioequivalent to the 10 mg film-coated presentation. Instructions for one should therefore not be transferred automatically to the other.
A primary pharmacokinetic report combined three studies, including a randomized crossover comparison in healthy men, a study in younger and older men with ED, and a substudy of a larger treatment trial. After a single dose, the orodispersible tablet produced 21–44% greater total blood exposure than the film-coated tablet. Peak concentrations did not show a consistent difference between the formulations.
Total exposure is the area under the blood concentration curve, not the duration of an erection or a direct measure of better intercourse. This study explains why formulation-specific instructions matter; it does not demonstrate that any dissolving seller product is faster, more effective or safer. It studied a particular vardenafil orodispersible formulation, not every sublingual tablet or oral jelly sold under another name.
Timing and food still need a precise label
The film-coated Levitra information describes treatment before anticipated sexual activity. A high-fat meal can delay the onset of the film-coated presentation. The orodispersible formulation has different food and administration findings, which is another reason to read the supplied leaflet.
For comparison, tadalafil has a much longer exposure pattern, while sildenafil and vardenafil have shorter ones. That broad distinction can help frame a discussion, but it cannot rank which medicine will work best for an individual. The practical comparison includes the chosen form, tolerability, other medicines and the cause of ED—not only the earliest advertised onset.
What the QT precaution means
QT is a measure of part of the heart’s electrical cycle. The label reports small average QT changes in controlled studies and says their clinical relevance cannot be generalized to every patient. It advises avoiding vardenafil in relevant risk contexts, including congenital QT prolongation and certain antiarrhythmic medicines.
This is a reason to tell the prescriber about rhythm conditions, fainting history and all medicines; it is not a prediction that every user will develop an arrhythmia. Products that may affect exposure or blood pressure can also change the assessment. A “same ingredient” substitution should preserve this medicine review.
Effects worth discussing
Headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal symptoms and dizziness appear in the reference information. Nitrates and nitric-oxide donors are contraindicated, as is riociguat. Strong metabolic interactions and alpha-blocker co-use have formulation-specific restrictions or precautions. Sudden hearing or vision loss and a prolonged erection require urgent attention; chest pain requires disclosure of the ED medicine taken.
The shared interaction guide provides the broader safety context without turning this page into an exhaustive adverse-event list.
Which products connect to it?
Levitra supplies a detailed reference record. Valif, Vilitra, Filitra and Zhewitra connect vardenafil to other company and formulation records. Some families include strengths above the reference ED maximum or add dapoxetine; those differences need to remain visible rather than being treated as simple upgrades.
