When ED treatment does not work
Prepare a useful treatment review without increasing a dose or combining products on your own.
A disappointing result does not tell you the cause on its own. Treatment may need review, and repeated erection problems may reflect an underlying condition. Arrange a discussion with the prescribing clinician.
Check what was prescribed
Bring the exact medicine, strength and formulation. Describe when you took it, whether food was involved, what response you noticed and any adverse effects. The ingredient labels give different timing and food instructions; the instructions for one medicine should not be transferred to another.
Check expectations
PDE5 inhibitor labels require sexual stimulation. These medicines are not a guarantee of an erection, a treatment for every cause of reduced desire, or permission to ignore cardiovascular symptoms.
Review the wider picture
NIDDK’s treatment guidance includes underlying causes, emotional factors and other treatment approaches. Your clinician may review other medicines, health conditions and whether a different approach is appropriate.
Do not increase a dose, combine ED medicines or add a supplement to force a response. If adverse effects are the problem, explain them before trying again. Safety and interactions.
Bring specific questions
- Is this the right formulation and regimen for me?
- Could my other medicines or health conditions affect the choice?
- Should the cause of my symptoms be investigated further?
- Which other treatments are appropriate if this one is unsuitable?
