Alprostadil: ingredient and formulations

Understand why alprostadil creams, injections and other formulations need separate product instructions.

Alprostadil belongs to a different medicine family from the oral PDE5 inhibitors. The UK Vitaros label identifies it as prostaglandin E1 and describes its action on blood vessels in erectile tissue.

The formulation is part of the treatment

Alprostadil can be used in different ED formulations. This catalogue currently covers Vitaros cream. Injection and other presentations need their own labels and training; cream instructions must not be used for them.

Vitaros and safe use

The UK label describes a single-use cream container and requires instruction on correct administration. It includes local reactions and warnings about prolonged erections. It also says not to combine Vitaros with PDE5 inhibitors because the combination’s safety and efficacy have not been established.

This ingredient hub is not an administration tutorial. Use the exact product leaflet and training from the prescribing team.
