Brand and generic ED medicines: read the product record

Distinguish an ingredient, a brand, a formulation and a country-specific medicine record.

A brand identifies a named product; an ingredient identifies its active substance. A regulated generic is more than a seller using the phrase “generic Viagra.” The useful comparison connects the ingredient to an exact formulation, company and product record.

What “generic” establishes in a regulatory context

The EMA explanation describes a generic developed to match an authorized reference medicine’s active substance and relevant use. Quality information and, where applicable, bioequivalence evidence support the regulatory assessment. Appearance and inactive ingredients can differ.

That explains why a differently coloured tablet from a recognized generic manufacturer can still be a legitimate medicine. It also explains why a shared ingredient name alone does not prove that every seller product has passed the relevant assessment. Different routes or other changes can require additional evidence rather than a simple name comparison.

Compare a complete identity

Start with the name, active ingredients, amount, form and company role. Then match the applicable local product information. Viagra and Penegra connect sildenafil to distinct records; Cialis and Tadacip connect tadalafil to distinct regional records.

A sponsor, importer, manufacturer and authorization holder can all be legitimate parts of a medicine’s record. They answer different questions. The Philippine Penegra registration, for example, distinguishes importer/distributor from the named Indian manufacturer.

Reputation is useful without answering everything

A recognized company such as Cipla or Ajanta is a valuable identity signal when attached to a documented exact product. It should not be discarded because it is outside one reference regulator’s market. Equally, that reputation should not be extended to an undocumented suffix or every pack a seller offers under the company’s name.

The Indian brand guide distinguishes pharmacy records from company catalogues without treating either absence or country of origin as a verdict on quality.

Keep suitability separate from substitution

Two products can share an ingredient while differing in form or intended regimen. Vardenafil’s reference dissolving and film-coated tablets demonstrate that even the same printed amount can produce different exposure. Tadalafil’s daily and as-needed contexts also need to remain distinct.

Ask a pharmacist about the actual supplied medicine, permitted substitution and the matching leaflet. A clear product identity makes comparison useful; a bold “generic” label or low price cannot replace it.
